PERUGIA – Sir Safety Conad Perugia is on its way home.
After yesterday’s success in Cev Cup against Cez Karlovarsko, the Block Devils are heading back to Italy, back into the head quarters of the PalaEvangelisti. They have to get ready for the imminent SuperLega commitment they have in Padua on Sunday. It’s the sixth match of the championship. President Sirci’s guys are coming back from the Czech Republic with the satisfaction of moving to the next round. They will be facing Mirad PU Presov, a Slovakian team, in the eighth finals of the second European competition.
They are coming home with a good injection of confidence and with useful information for coach Castellani.
Yesterday’s match against Karlovarsko, in the Sport Hall, brought a dowry of several positive things for Perugia. Besides the “prize” at stake and not considering the different level of their opponents, the team has grown after the defeat against Civitanova, on the home field last Sunday.
For example, serves were quite sharper and with this fundamental the team scored twelve aces and it constantly put pressure on the Czech back row. All the black-and-white players had a good level of forcefulness in this.
Reception and attack, after a difficult first set, gave important percentages of performance and this helped De Cecco pass in an unpredictable and precise way.
Another point to mention, talking about less technical considerations, is the reaction of the team after a slow first set, in a small sports facility packed with Karlovarsko supporters. Sir Conad came together, showing its greater technical strength and turning the match around in their favour.
Castellani initially sent in Russell, outside hitter, first in a pair with Kaliberda, then, after half of the first set, with Fromm. And “Spider” showed his remarkable offensive qualities (15 points), doing well also in reception and defence. Russell, at his first experience away from the United States, has grown and this can be an important element for Sir Conad this season.
The last individual consideration of merits is about Tzioumakas, opposite: in this initial part of the season, he is proving that he can be an important player for Perugia. Last night, on the field in the fourth set, the 20 year old Greek player showed his responsibility and personality, scoring 9 points in just one fraction and these helped the Block Devils end the match.
The last pleasant consideration of this first seasonal away game in Europe goes to the 28 Sir Maniacs that put together tourism and cheer these days. Loud, passionate and extremely fair as usual, the black-and-white supporters coloured a small part of the Karlovarsko Sport Hall, inciting the team from the first to the last play.
From tomorrow it’s back to the championship. The guys will be back in the sports facility, following Castellani’s orders, to prepare at their best for an insidious away game in Padua. This team had Lube working as a slave just one week ago. Sir Conad wants to restart also in SuperLega!
