PERUGIA – The day after the match is quite bitter for Sir Safety Conad Perugia. Yesterday’s defeat on the home field against Verona, on the day of the Block Devils’ debut, is certainly not the result the Black-and-whites and their supporters were hoping for.
But the match tells us that Perugia is still a “work in progress” that needs a lot of work, in order to become the team that everyone is dreaming about. Furthermore, the fact that they have been together for less than a week certainly didn’t help Daniel Castellani’s job. Last night, the Argentinean coach tried, in all the possible ways, to find the right path to turn the game around for the Block Devils. However, many elements lead to Verona’s earned victory and three points.
Castellani explains:
«If I think about yesterday, I see a series of reasons. The debut got to us, since we are a team with many new players. And this, especially in some areas like the reception line, with two new athletes out of three, leads to a problem of harmony. Verona proved to be ahead of us and punished us. Our opponents were good and smart in understanding where they could serve, while we never caused them problems in reception. We were also lacking game continuity, we made several mistakes on our own in many situations, like counter attacking on high balls and the several invasions. So, several different things punished us in the end. But under a point of view of will and responsibility I can’t say anything to the guys. What was missing is the technical reaction and game system. But this is just work».
Work, a word that Castellani repeats several times.
«Besides the enthusiasm of the debut, I knew what we were facing and that you need time to put together players that arrived five days ago. Right now the teams that have a tested sextet have a bit of a head start, we are of course behind. But no excuses, we need to play and bustle. The priority now, by developing the work in training and also playing, is making the team grow».
Emanuele Birarelli also talks about yesterday’s defeat. “Mamba”, on the court just for a few fragments of the sets to serve, calmly examines the Black-and-whites’ setback:
«Certainly it wasn’t the beginning we wanted, be started badly. Facing Verona, a team that is equipped and prepared, didn’t help us, but we didn’t play as we expected. I think that it’s important for us to think about things day by day. Everybody talked about our ambitions, but you build the team during the week so all we have to do is think about Tuesday, come to the facility with will to train and push. The good results will come».
Even Birarelli emphasizes on the technical-tactical issues that Sir faced:
«We played badly», says Birarelli. «I can understand that from the outside it seems like a problem of attitude, but when the technical and tactical aspects are not settled and what happens on the field doesn’t help, the uncertainty of playing badly overcomes the will of doing well. So I don’t think it’s right to talk about a problem of attitude, it was an ugly match from both a technical and tactical point of view, in certain situations we weren’t able to solve the difficulties we had and I believe this was the problem».
